Nice Movie... So What's With the Duck?

I am a film student at COD and have seen many wonderful films which are being entered in the Student Film Festival held on the April 25.
To watch a horror flick and then see a shot of the duck, sort of throws off the entire film. Imagine a man going in for his kill and then you see the actress holding up a yellow duck in an attempt to defend herself. Or a film based on a dying young man and on his bed stand is a yellow rubber ducky. It just doesn't work!
I do understand the purpose for putting the duck in the film is to signify the recent making of the film, but a duck? And not the type of duck which sits in a pond, but a yellow duck you see floating at a carnival when you're trying to score a cheap stuffed animal for your date.
The rules couldn't be changed to have a specific key, a clock, a lamp, a ball just something other than a yellow duck?
It really makes it challenging to do a pick-up shot with a yellow duck and somehow tie it into your film. It can be done but it's such a strange choice and I feel it needs to change.
