Work Experience

Everyone on campus should be signed up for College of the Desert Work Experience Program. There are no words to describe how beneficial this program is and how much it has to offer to every student regardless of their background and experience. I took work experience this semester and through its motivating tools I have learned so much that not only I have a job, I have my own business now.

H1N1 Flu Update

Swine Flu fears ease across the nation, as the Center for Disease Control reports the spread of a more mild form of the virus than originally thought. The CDC sill expects the infection rate to rise within the coming weeks, but has receded its recomendation to close schools.

"Paws and Hearts" new organization with a lot of heart

When Paws and Hearts founder Richard Waxman first moved to the Coachella Valley, he was amazed that a pet therapy organization did not exist out here. He had prior experience with the wonders of this type of therapy, and after he adopted his terrier-mix Lucky, he formed "Paws and Hearts.

Interview with COD Vice President Farley Herzek

Time to meet our new Vice President of Academic Affairs, Farley Herzek! Herzek's new role on campus will include collaborating with President Jerry Patton and various faculty members on decisions to improve the campus quality. Herzek also hopes to bind and build stronger connections within the surrounding area schools.

Summer and fall intersession registration available now

Even though registration for summer and fall classes began May 6 for Priority 1, it is not too late to register for courses. Unlike last winter, College of the Desert (COD) is offering two intesession options lasting six and eight weeks. The courses start June 15 and are availabe at three locations: the Palm Desert campus, the Indio campus, and the new campus site in Mecca-Thermal.

College of the Desert opens new Barker Nursing Building

TheĀ grand opening for the new Coeta and Donald Barker Foundation Nursing Complex was held at the site on the west side of the Campus on Friday, May 01. The ceremony feature musical performance and short speeches followed by an open house of the new facility and refreshments.

Faculty spotlight: Dr. Fesmire
Dr. Fesmire, a music professor at College of the Desert (COD), he has beem teaching here for the past two semesters. A California-native, he attended Cabrillo Community College. He finished his un-dergraduate studies at Berkeley College of Music in Boston where he majored in guitar performance.

Faculty Spotlight on Diamond Braverman
Diamond Braverman is in his third year on staff with COD as the Theatre and Art Technician. His wide range of life and work experiences make him a fascinating person to know as well as an indispensible asset to our school. He has been Production Designer for at least 20 independent films, built sets and props for over 200 commercials and worked with stars such as Cindy Crawford and Rodney Dangerfield.

College of the Desert salutes its real life heroes

Carl Blea, 38, joined the Navy in 1988. He has served on the USS Carola Sea (CV-43), the USS George Wash-ington (CV-73) and the USS Emory S. Land. Carl Blea is a retired navy Chief Culinary Specialist after 28 awards, five deployments and 20 years of service.

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) traces it's beginnings to a Society that originated with six charter members under the name of Kappa Phi Omicron at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, in 1910. Today, PTK is one of the largest honors societies in the world.
