"Skins," a popular British television show that depicts vivid drug use and graphic sex scenes, has critics concerned that the same concept may cross the pond.

The tremendous success of this show is seen as a threat by proponents of the strict Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations in the United States. FCC regulations in the U.S. on what can be shown on television are considerably stricter than those in Europe. However, the British frown upon violence more than scenes of sexual content.

"Skins" is sweeping Great Britain and is rated one of the most popular shows in the nation. It is clear that this show is generating a large amount of money. This is where the perceived threat lies. As the old adage goes, "cash makes change." If there's a profit to be made by loosening the regulation in the United States, pressure could mount to do so.

Each episode of "Skins" focuses in on an individual character's life issues. Among other issues, the topics of drugs, sex, eating disorders, and heavy partying are conveyed in a nonchalant manner. The show is sending the message that the portrayed lifestyles are commonplace among teens today.

Although some people may feel that the U.S. regulations are lax, there is no comparison with what is aimed at British teens.

As for now, the FCC prevents the airing of completely demeaning images, as the British so comfortably do. However, the question rises to the surface of how easily tempted our nation may feel to loosen the regulations once the realization of this major cash flow hits. After all, it wasn't until about the early 70's that regulations have loosened, and have only become more and more lax over time. With the prospect of money, who can foretell what will be allowed on TV in the coming years. Shows such as "Skins" serve as a temptation for the FCC to back down.
