After a disappointing loss to Football Championship Subdivision Cal Poly last weekend, this Saturday's matchup against Notre Dame can't come soon enough for San Diego State.
The team was obviously hurt by the emotional defeat, but head coach Chuck Long believes his team won't have any trouble shaking it off for the nationally televised showdown with the Irish.

Since when do we punish kids for being too good?
Last week I read a disheartening story on ESPN.com. Nine-year-old Jericho Scott, from New Haven, Conn., was told he could no longer pitch in his youth baseball league simply because he throws too hard (40 mph).

It seems like hardly anyone can say no to Bayno.
This summer, as many of us took a break from thinking about our futures at LMU, first-year coach of the men's basketball team Bill Bayno set in stone a successful future for himself at LMU, putting together one of the most impressive recruiting classes in school history.

Dr. Cheryl Grills said in her convocation address to the freshmen on Sunday that a vocation is where the line between ones personal life and professional life are blurred. For Betty Werner, there was no line at all; athletics was her life.
Werner, who had served as the senior associate athletics director at LMU since 2000, lost a five-month battle with cancer on Saturday, Aug.

I know what you're thinking: Already?
The answer is, yes, of course. I know USC doesn't play this weekend and Ohio State plays Ohio, but I figured you could get a head start on preparing for the matchup of the century.
OK, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it's a big game.

As if losing to Cal Poly for the second time in three years wasn't bad enough, the San Diego State football team also lost several key players because of injuries in Saturday night's game. Former tight end and starting defensive end Tony DeMartinis will likely miss all of the 2008 season with a torn ACL and MCL. He suffered the injury just a few minutes after recording a sack on the first play of the night.

Dear Big Play,
It's been a while since we last spoke, but I hope you remember me. I still remember you - your unpredictability and the immediate impact you had on me and whoever else was around you.
We used to have a good relationship, you and me, going back all the way to freshman year in 2005, before we went our separate ways.

A group of 30 athletes gather on the field, each is presented with a precious package.
Inside is a number, 15, which carries a weight one hundred times greater than the paper on which it is written.
The Dons enter this season attempting to win the Orange Empire Conference for a 15th consecutive time, and it is up to the few veterans to explain the significance of the task at hand.

Three of the most poised members of the San Diego State football team looked devastated.
Their eyes, puffy and red, told the entire story.
As much as head coach Chuck Long, senior linebacker Russell Allen and redshirt freshman quarterback Ryan Lindley tried to say the right things, the pain was obvious.
This loss hurt.

Perhaps you missed it for some reason or another. It could have been the distraction of a new school year, the pain of moving to a new apartment or the simple fact that you don't read the Los Angeles Times and chose to get your news from a more homegrown source, say, I don't know, the Daily Trojan.
